P.S. Made some minor changes to the butler’s name in chapters 27 and 30 from Adrain to just Ad as I just realised the author switched to using the nickname (short form) of his name in the subsequent chapters, like calling Stephanie -> Steph. The butler’s last name isn’t mentioned in the story.

1. Lu Hao (吕昊) – Note that the actual pinyin of 吕 is lǚ so Lu Hao is actually Lü Hao but ü is not an english character so ‘u’ is used instead.
2. her and she (她)– the pronouns ‘him’ and ‘he’ are 他 in chinese, which is the same pronunciation (tā) as 她 for ‘her’ and ‘she’ pronouns, which is why neither of the parties are clear whether one is referring to a female or male if they don’t specifically state the gender. To avoid confusion, I kept it to ‘her’ and ‘she’ when translating but italicised the words when Lin Yanchen is the one speaking. (Extra info: 他 is commonly used nowadays for both male and females)

Lin Yanchen’s friend, Lu Hao¹, suddenly rang Lin Yanchen up, asking through the phone, “You rascal, are you even my bro? You didn’t inform me that you came to England. If they didn’t tell me you came, I wouldn’t even know about this.”

Lin Yanchen used to look down upon people who put their lovers before their friends. Now, he found time spent with his friend annoying and a waste of his time, which could be better used for staying with Chu Xun. However, worried that these people would just come looking for him directly, he could only explain, “It’s only been a few days since I came back and I’ve something on. I’ll meet up with you guys when I’m free…”

“What’s so important?” The other party questioned discontentedly. “Are you in a relationship?”

Lin Yanchen immediately panicked, giving himself away. “Did Tina tell you? I told her not to tell anyone, tch.”

“Hahahaha, she didn’t tell me. She only said that you’re here. You actually admitted when I casually asked that question? When did you become so dumb? Love does more people stupid.” His friend laughed.

Lin Yanchen: “…”

Lu Hao asked, “What are you so embarrassed about falling in love? Bring that person out. Let us see what kind of person she is to make Master Lin totally love-struck.”

“Then—then, I’ve to ask her² if she’s willing to meet you guys first.” Lin Yanchen suddenly felt shy.

The person on the other side of the phone was silent for a moment, before he complained, “What the fuck, your voice suddenly became super disgusting… Do you need to protect her so much? You’re emitting the sour stench of love.”

Lin Yanchen laughed softly and brushed Lu Hao off, “I’ll talk to you later, I’ve something on. Let’s continue next time.”

“Lin Yanchen, you…”

Done saying that, Lin Yanchen hung up the phone without any hesitation, not waiting for his friend’s reply. He even instructed his butler to inform any friends who might make these unimportant calls that he was out, and not to allow anyone else into this manor.

How inconsiderate of them to disrupt his time with Ah Xun.

But Ah Xun was still sleeping. He couldn’t bear to wake Ah Xun up.

Chu Xun was particularly sleepy these days.

It was already after 12PM when he woke up. How ridiculous of him.

Though, his head was still drowsy.

He sat up and shortly massaged his temple.

Very worried about Chu Xun, Lin Yanchen poured the older a cup of warm water. “I better get a doctor to do a check up for you.”

Chu Xun was of course unwilling to let others know about his illness and to seek treatment. “Just measuring my temperature will do.” He said, not wanting his illness to be exposed.

Lin Yanchen didn’t listen to Chu Xun this time. He called a doctor over to examine the older.

Chu Xun panicked badly, fearing that the doctor would notice something. But with no place to escape to, he got angry with Lin Yanchen. “Didn’t I say I don’t want to see a doctor?”

“If you are not feeling well, you should see a doctor. Why don’t you want to do that?” Lin Yanchen said, refusing to give in.

Chu Xun retorted unreasonably, “I… I just hate to see a doctor. I hate the smell of medications.”

Taken aback, Lin Yanchen laughed. “It’s my first time seeing you act like this. So there’s actually something Chu Xun is afraid of in this world? You’re actually afraid of seeing a doctor. I thought only kids are afraid of that? I remember now. You looked quite scared when we were at the hospital in Canada too.”

Chu Xun: “…” He couldn’t refute it.

Lin Yanchen took Chu Xun’s hand in his one and said gently, “I’ll be with you. Will this make you less afraid?”

Being looked at like that, Chu Xun’s heart softened immediately. He even started to think, what will happen if Lin Yanchen finds out about his illness? Lin Yanchen is such a good person. The younger definitely won’t leave him and will accompany him to treat his illness instead.

Actually, he’s really afraid of loneliness. It’s not that he doesn’t want to have someone to be with him all the way till the end.

If… If the doctor finds out about his illness this time and Xiao Lin isn’t bothered by it, he’ll muster the courage to fight his illness.

He sighed on the inside, then smiled as he said, “I said I’m not sick, right? You even went your way out to call a doctor over.”

“But lately, you’ve been feeling sleepy often…” Lin Yanchen pointed out.

“This is what happens when I don’t go to work. Laziness is a disease everyone has. I could still maintain my working habits at the start, but after a while, I became lazy.”

Chu Xun somehow managed to give an explanation.

Chu Xun wanted to pretend that he was fine during dinner and made himself eat more.

In fact, all the dishes on the table were his favourite. Xiao Lin somewhat understood what he liked after being with him for a month, knowing a few of his favourite dishes. But he just didn’t have the appetite and ended up forcing half a small bowl of rice down his stomach.

His stomach was churning and his whole esophagus was feeling extremely uncomfortable. He took a deep breath, wanting to suppress the urge to puke. However, the more he tried to suppress it, the worse the feeling that came after that. He had to cover his mouth.

Lin Yanchen noticed Chu Xun’s odd behaviour and pat the older’s back, asking, “Ah Xun, what’s wrong? Did you choke on something?”

Unable to hold back the unpleasant urge, Chu Xun frowned as he said in a muffled voice , “I… I’m going to the toilet.”

He immediately locked the door when he got into the toilet, holding onto the toilet bowl and vomiting badly. Not just the food he ate, he vomited until nothing could come out anymore. Good thing that he didn’t throw up all of his digestive fluid.

Chu Xun finally felt better.

He sat on the ground, breathing heavily.

He had the feeling that his mouth and body smelled bad, as though they were about to rot.

Chu Xun didn’t feel good. Even though he had prepared himself mentally for it, when it really came to this day, he couldn’t be as calm as he had imagined numerous times before.

What other reasons can there be? It’s definitely the illness lurking in his body that is starting to act up, urging him to leave the world soon. This is only the beginning; it will be more and more painful in the future. Until the point that he won’t be able to treat it as nothing no matter how strong his will is.

He looked down on himself. Look, Chu Xun ah, Chu Xun, who told you to be greedy? Retribution came so quickly, didn’t it?

Chu Xun knew clearly that his days were numbered. Instead of receiving proper treatment, he daringly went all out to enjoy himself, even overindulging in sex. Maybe the days left for him to live had decreased as he spent his remaining days exhausting time to go wild with Xiao Lin.

If anyone is to ask Chu Xun if he regrets, he will actually say, he doesn’t regret.

He doesn’t feel regretful at all.

Rather than dying in pain and loneliness, he’s fortunate to meet Xiao Lin and spend his last few days with the younger.

He’s just sad that he can’t have more time.

Chu Xun clenched his fist and punched the ground, punching it to vent his frustration and until his hand was aching.

He stopped when tears fell on the back of his hand.

He was always trying to delay it for as long as he could.

He said to himself, it doesn’t matter if you are the one who led yourself into such a state, but you can’t drag Xiao Lin down with you…

“Tok tok tok.”

Someone knocked on the door.

“Ah Xun, Ah Xun, are you still inside? Are you okay? Give me a response.”

Chu Xun took a deep breath, stood up, pressed the flush, and washed away the filth.

He went to wash his face to wash off the odour as much as possible.

Opening the door, he saw Lin Yanchen’s worried face in front of him. “Why are you looking at me like that? I just felt nausea because I’m not used to those dishes. This cook’s cooking tastes so strange. He added a type of spice I don’t like, so I felt uncomfortable after eating the food.”

Lin Yanchen asked, “Really? Why didn’t I taste it?”

“There’s a problem with your taste bud.” Chu Xun joked.

Lin Yanchen frowned, voice sounding doubtful as he asked, “Really?”

It suddenly became hard to survive the night again. Chu Xun even began to be afraid of sleeping. What if he won’t wake up anymore after sleeping? He made a promise with Lin Yanchen to let the younger court him again. They are just at the initial stage of dating, not even sharing a room yet.

He felt uneasy sleeping alone.

Should he have heartlessly boarded the plane and left back then?

After he dies, Xiao Lin will surely fall in love with someone else, right?

What does that have got to do with him? Does someone as selfish as him have the rights to be jealous? He should have left earlier.

When it should originally be three days long, he starts thinking about the fourth day, followed by a week, then half a month and ultimately, he wants to stay for a whole month… It’s a cycle. Chu Xun felt a dull pain in his stomach, so he took another painkiller.

Still unable to sleep, he put on a jacket, wanting to go out for a breather.

This house was as big as an old castle.

In the night, it looked eerie, as though there was no one around, but at the same time, it seemed as though someone could be hiding at any spot.

Chu Xun thought he heard the sound of a baby crying as he walked on.

He should have felt afraid, but probably because he was dying, he had nothing to fear.

He even followed the sound and finally found the source of it. It wasn’t a spirit.

Under the windowsill and beside the bushes, there was a dirty kitten lying in snow and mud.

The kitten looked liked it was born not too long ago, eyes not even opened yet. It was abandoned on this winter day, looking dirty after being stained by mud. It didn’t even know how to crawl, looking as though it was frozen stiff, not moving at all.

Maybe it was already dead.

But Chu Xun felt that the kitten’s body was still soft, most likely not dead yet. He wrapped the kitten with a handkerchief and brought it back into the warm house.

The lights along the corridor lit up suddenly.

Lin Yanchen already got up when he heard some movements outside, then got scared clearly awake after realising that the door of Chu Xun’s room was opened, the older’s blanket was uncovered and the older was nowhere in sight.

He finally found the person he was looking for.

Lin Yanchen asked, “What’s wrong? Why did you get up in the middle of the night?”

Chu Xun held up the kitten in his hand. “I found a kitten.”

Seeming to have heard Chu Xun’s words, the kitten moved slightly and gave a soft “meow”.

Seeing how the kitten was struggling to survive when it was at the brink of death, Chu Xun thought of himself and suddenly felt a tingly sensation in his nose. “It wants to survive.”

“Xiao Lin, it wants to survive. Let’s save it.” He added with a tinge of sadness.
